The link between emotional eating and digestive problems
The biggest challenge with emotional eaters is that their eating habits are actually making their digestion worse. Overeating, binge-eating, eating too much of one kind of food, eating too frequently, these are a recipe for impairing digestion even worse. By snacking every couple of hours, you don’t allow the migrating motor complex to turn on and sweep the bacteria out of the small intestine…leading to small intestine bacterial overgrowth or SIBO. You are more likely to be constipated because the gut hormones are not regulated and peristalsis is stalled. Your insulin is out of whack from stress and over-fueling causing you to retain fat. But trying to stop eating too much, trying to stop snacking…this doesn’t work. Willpower doesn’t work for the emotional eater. There are too many factors at play and the emotional eating tends to win at the end of the day.
Emotional eaters eat out of loneliness, dissatisfaction, perfectionism, embarrassment, humiliation, shame, isolation, unhappiness, social anxiety, anger, sadness, lack of control, and grief just to name a few.
But even going to therapy doesn’t seem to help. You’ve tried that before.
People call you sensitive. You feel sensitive. You feel like emotions are a normal part of your day to day life and wonder what other people are doing with theirs? Do they just not feel anything? Other people seem to let things go so easily while you just can’t.
It’s possible that you’ve spent a ton of time learning about healthy foods. You may even think that it is ok to eat as much healthy fat as you want because it is good for you. How can you be spending all this money and time on getting healthy food into your body and still you are wearing stretchy pants every day because your favorite cute jeans sausage your love handles over the top and it just sucks.
It’s possible that you are dealing with very real health challenges that require you to eat a particular way. From food allergies to autoimmunity, irritable bowel syndrome to dysbiosis. These require you to eat certain foods and avoid others. So paying attention to food is something that you have to do in order to not feel even worse.
Emotional eating and extra physical baggage
The most annoying thing about being an emotional eater is that everyone can see it. Everyone can see that you are overweight. Everyone can see that you are going back for seconds or thirds. You may have had moments of being skinny, but they don’t last.
The other annoying thing about being overweight is that you feel vain for caring. You should prioritize healthy eating and self-care and stop focusing on your looks just for the sake of how you look. That is the message that the media has been sending to you your whole life and you should be fighting that message because it isn’t healthy for women.
Emotions and deservability
But wouldn’t it be nice to just be effortlessly skinny? Comfortable in your own skin. Completely satisfied with looking in the mirror at your naked body? Wouldn’t it be even better to not have to be preoccupied with food? To be able to get lost in your work, your hobbies, your life and forget to eat? Wouldn’t that just feel nice?
This journey has nothing to do with anyone except yourself. This is internal. It isn’t really about making someone else love you or think you are sexy. It is about being able to take a deep breath and release it with a full body feeling of deep satisfaction.
You deserve that. You deserve to feel that way. You deserve to unravel all the habits that are locking you into this jail cell where only food can get you out.
You deserve to love your whole body inside and out.
You deserve to be happy, truly deeply fulfilled.
Most emotional eaters don’t realize how much they are doing for other people. Constantly making sure that everyone around them is ok so that they can try to get their own needs met afterward.
The confusion of intersecting emotions and trying to untangle them is hard.
